Do You Find You are Exhausted Before Your Day is Even Over?
If you frequently wonder: “Why am I always tired?” you’re not alone. Two out of every five Americans report feeling wiped out most of the week, and what's interesting is that one in three adults fails to get enough sleep. Between work or school, family and friends, and all the other commitments you’re juggling, it’s easy to blame constant fatigue on being busy.
However, if you're tired all the time, it can be difficult to pinpoint what's causing the fatigue so, always start by looking at the most common causes:
- Poor sleep habits
- Lack of exercise
- Poor nutrition
- Hormones
Poor Sleep Habits-
Sleep is essential for maintaining good health and energy levels. If you do not get enough sleep at night, you will feel tired during the day, plain and simple! Your poor sleep habits could be caused by stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, travel, illness, or other temporary interruptions to your normal routine or by having an irregular bedtime routine (e.g., going to bed too late). which tends to interrupt your sleep cycle.
But make no mistake, your body is 100% affected by your poor sleep habits:
- more likely to produce the stress-response hormone cortisol.
- weakens the Immune System
- can cause hormonal imbalances
- causes weight gain
- increases the risk of hypertension and heart disease
- causes memory loss
- too sedentary
Poor Nutrition
If you’re eating poorly or skipping meals because of busy schedules or travel — all those things can contribute to a fatigued state of mind. And when someone has chronic inflammation — whether they know it or not — then they may also experience fatigue as one of its symptoms.
Low levels of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids are both associated with fatigue.
You can improve these habits by:
- more sun exposure
- supplementing with vitamin D if you're deficient
- eating fish twice a week (particularly oily fish like salmon)
- make sure you are eating enough protein at every meal (about 0.8 grams per pound of body weight)
Lack of Eercise-
Exercise increases circulation throughout your body and helps your muscles work more efficiently, which means less energy is spent on simple movements like walking or climbing stairs. Exercising regularly also helps reduce stress levels and improve moods, both of which improve the quality of life for most people.
Exercise also helps control blood sugar levels so that they don't fluctuate too much throughout the day — this keeps your energy steady over time.
Eating whole foods, getting enough sleep (7-9 hours), and moving regularly are important ways to manage our energy levels. When we don’t get enough sleep or enough calories, our bodies will begin to use stored fat as an energy source. This process leads to cravings for sweets and carbs which can make us feel more tired. Also, when we don’t move enough we break down muscle tissue and produce more cortisol, which also makes us feel more fatigued.
However, if you’ve made some simple lifestyle changes—like going to bed earlier and managing stress—and you’re still feeling the symptoms of fatigue it is time to dig a little deeper.
Hormone Deficiency-
Hormones are the chemical messengers that regulate many bodily functions, so, when hormones are not optimal, energy production can be impaired which leads to fatigue you may experience body aches and you'll feel like you’re running on empty. You may even be exhausted before your alarm clock goes off in the morning. These are the signs and symptoms that tell you It is time to start to address your depleting hormone levels.
