Movement vs. Exercise: Why Movement Tops Exercise

Movement vs. Exercise: Why Movement Tops Exercise

We often use the terms "movement" and "exercise" interchangeably, but they're not quite the same thing. Exercise is a structured activity with the specific goal of improving physical fitness. Movement, on the other hand, is any type of physical activity that gets you moving and using your body.

While exercise can be an excellent way to improve physical fitness, it's not always the most accessible or enjoyable option for everyone. Exercise can feel like a chore, and it can be difficult to stick with a rigid routine. Movement, on the other hand, can be more flexible and enjoyable. It can include activities like dancing, hiking, gardening, or even just taking a walk around the neighborhood.

When we prioritize movement over exercise, we allow ourselves to be more in tune with our bodies and engage in activities that bring us joy. This can lead to a more consistent and sustainable movement practice, rather than relying solely on exercise to achieve our fitness goals.

Exercise vs. Movement: A Comparison Chart

Here's a comparison chart to highlight some of the benefits of both exercise and movement:

Exercise Movement

Structured activity Flexible activity

Specific fitness goals Focus on joy and enjoyment

Can improve physical fitness Can improve physical fitness and overall well-being

Can feel like a chore Can feel like a fun activity

Requires discipline and routine Can be incorporated into daily life more easily

Abundant Mindset Practice: Changing How You Do Exercise and Movement

Our mindset plays a significant role in how we approach movement and exercise. If we view exercise as a chore or something we "should" do, it's going to be more challenging to stick with it consistently. On the other hand, if we approach movement with a mindset of abundance and joy, we're more likely to make it a sustainable habit.

One way to cultivate an abundant mindset is through gratitude practice. When we focus on what we're grateful for in our bodies and our ability to move, we can shift our perspective from what we "should" do to what we're capable of doing and enjoy doing.

Another way to cultivate an abundant mindset is to focus on progress over perfection. When we're focused on perfection, we're more likely to get discouraged and give up when we don't meet our expectations. But when we focus on progress, we celebrate small wins and use them as motivation to keep going.
