The American diet also lacks fruits and vegetables which contain essential nutrients that help keep our hormones balanced especially as we get older. The truth is that we need to be cognizant of our hormones as hormonal change is a natural process and a normal part of aging that starts around 30 and by 60 our hormones are a mess.  Our bad eating habits affect and causes havoc with our endocrine system.

The typical American diet does not contain enough fiber or essential fatty acids which leads to inflammation in the body which can cause hormonal imbalance. If you are overweight, your hormones are already out of balance because from years of chronic stress and carrying extra weight around.

What Are the Hormones Affected by an Imbalanced Diet?

Insulin is a hormone released by your pancreas to help convert sugars into energy for your body to use. An imbalanced diet can cause your insulin levels to skyrocket which can lead to diabetes and other health issues such as heart disease, obesity, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Leptin and ghrelin are two hormones that regulate appetite by sending signals to your brain when you are hungry or full after eating a meal. These hormones also play a role in regulating metabolism so they need to be balanced for optimal weight management purposes.

Adrenal gland hormones such as cortisol help our bodies cope with stressors such as work stress, family stress or financial stress.  Cortisol in excess will not only cause belly fat and hormonal imbalance but in general, make you blah!

A Cleveland Clinic study found that one-third of all older adults have hormonal imbalances that raise their risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses.
